FAQs

Here are commonly asked questions about volunteering.

I'm ready to volunteer my time to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto. How do I apply?
First thing's first. Decide which position you want to apply for. Take your time while reading through our volunteer postings and make your choice.

Please complete our online application using Volgistics.

What happens after you have my information?
Your information will be reviewed, and if an interview is required, Volunteer Resources will contact you to set up an interview date and answer any questions you may have.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
You must be 18 years or older to volunteer at the House or in our Family Rooms.

Is there a minimum time commitment?
In order to best support the families at RMHC Toronto, consistency and commitment from volunteers is essential. Please only apply if you are able to commit to one shift per week for a minimum of six months.

Is there anything else I need to know?
Good question! With most of our positions (except special events volunteers), you will require a Vulnerable Sector Screening police check. We will also ask for your resume and two references: one professional and one personal.

How long will the volunteer application process take?
Our goal is to have you volunteering within three weeks from the time you first apply. However, this also depends whether we have positions available that suit your application.

Will any training or orientation be offered?
We would never think of placing you in a role without training! We provide orientation and training for all our volunteers regardless of the position they apply to.

I really want to help and currently have a lot of free time to volunteer more than once a week in more than one position. Is this possible?
We appreciate your initiative and your passion. We ask our volunteers to commit to one position for a minimum of six months before exploring other volunteer opportunities at RMHC Toronto.

I'm a post-secondary student and I would like to do my placement at the House. Am I able to do this?
RMHC Toronto does offer student placements, but not through Volunteer Resources. For more information about student placements, send your information to info@rmhctoronto.ca.

I am interested in volunteering at RMHC Toronto, but I am also interested in employment opportunities. Do you hire volunteers?
Our Volunteer Resources team is not involved in the recruitment or hiring of current volunteers within the House or our Family Rooms. Job openings are sent to all of our current volunteers, along with information on how to apply.

What else should I be thinking about before I apply to volunteer with RMHC Toronto?
Another good question! Take time to think about whether you are able to make the six-month commitment to volunteer with us. If this commitment won’t work with your schedule right now however, please know that we recruit volunteers throughout the year and you can reconnect with us when you have more time.
