Sometimes, a friendly face makes a world of difference for the families staying at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto.
Mary Lipsett and Yvonne Paech are two of those smiling faces. They’ve been volunteering at RMHC Toronto’s reception desk once a week for seven and six years, respectively, and try to brighten the days of everyone they meet.
“I hope my happy smile makes families feel comfortable,” says Yvonne.
While both women see the benefits RMHC Toronto provides for families with seriously ill children, Mary in particular knows our impact from her 40 years as a nurse.
“Many years ago, I did some training at SickKids,” she says. “In my day, there were very strict visiting hours. When they were over, it was pandemonium. You can’t tell little ones that mom has to go home. Now that RMHC Toronto is there to provide a place to stay nearby, I think it’s such marvelous support.”
On top of the satisfaction they feel volunteering their time, Mary and Yvonne always have fun during their shifts together.
“We hit it off right away,” says Yvonne.
“I love working with Yvonne. We always have such a good time,” says Mary. “It’s like a mini social holiday for me.”
