As a volunteer’s love for RMHC Toronto grew, so did her career ambitions.
When Justine Lee did her undergraduate placement at RMHC Toronto almost two years ago, she never anticipated how much the House would end up influencing her career.
Justine did an Early Childhood Education placement at the House from September 2016 to January 2017, working with the Family Services team to plan family activities like movie nights, arts and crafts, and preparing presents for the Holidays.
She loved the role and being at the House so much she decided to volunteer for the RMHC Toronto Summer Camp that July and August. She had worked at other summer camps before, but this camp experience was special for her.
“RMHC Toronto Summer Camp is unique because there are children coming and going each week, so you have to be flexible. I loved getting to know the kids and watching them grow and have fun.”
As Justine’s love for RMHC Toronto grew, she decided to volunteer for the RMHC Toronto School in the 2017-18 school year.
Justine says volunteering at the School helped her develop a vision for her future career.
“Volunteering at the House opened my eyes to my career options because I’ve had the chance to explore different areas of working with families and children.”
She has high praise for Ami Armagost, Program Coordinator at RMHC Toronto. “Ami inspired me to pursue my master’s in early childhood studies. She helped me realize this is something I could really do.”
Justine begins her masters at Ryerson University this September and plans to continue volunteering at the House.
“The best part about RMHC Toronto is the people. You get to know these families going through tough times. They are so strong, I’ve never seen such resiliency. I’m constantly amazed by it.
Justine says that the best part about volunteering at RMHC Toronto is that it has helped her grow.
“As a volunteer I’ve always felt supported by the staff and I’ve grown both personally and professionally. I recommend volunteering at RMHC Toronto if you are looking to do something fulfilling. The House is a lively and welcoming place to be.”
RMHC Toronto values our volunteers like Justine, whose long-standing commitment and dedication helps us provide a place like home for our families.
